The common Chabottes is located at the centre of the department of Hautes-Alpes. Located in the middle valley of the Drac (depression of the valley Champsaur), which determines the barrier between the Alps and the Great Alps, it enjoys a climate intermediary between the Mediterranean climate mountain in the southern Alps and more wet Northern Alps. It is located 18 km from Gap, prefecture des Hautes-Alpes and 9 km from the administrative capital of Saint-Bonnet-Champsaur. The municipality has 610 inhabitants in the last census.
Since 1962, we can see the rise of the population. This is due largely to the development of the town on the plain, the growth of winter tourism, linked to development and attendance at the ski resort of Orcières-Merlette, but also the summer tourism through the creation of Plan water Champsaur on the neighbouring commune of Saint-Julien-en-Champsaur
The common Chabottes is included in the peripheral area of the Ecrins National Park.
It is cut in two
lengthwise by the torrent Drac who develops a broad plain, the right
side of the river gives him a hillside site and to the left is the large
agricultural plain and is bisected by the road No. 944 who joined the
station Orcières Merlette, which helped develop the outskirts of this
path, instead of passing many tourists.
This common 996 hectares is located at an altitude of between 1050 and 1350 m: there is a division between two distinct parts:
-
one agricultural stretching from 1050 to 1060 m, sector cultures bocagères
-
another medium mountain stretching from 1060 to 1320 m for the highest peaks, where you can find the mountain pastures.
Its activity is balanced between agriculture, tourism, trade and handicrafts
